On 7 oct 2011, South African Post issued a stampset with aircraft on stamps, aviation history, occasion of the anniversary 100th anniversary of the first South African airmail flight. The South African Post office will commemorate this historical flight with a miniature sheet which has odd shaped same as aircraft.

This set depicts the aircraft in flight in 1911, the first South African airmail flight between Kenilworth and Muizenberg. The Muizenberg Post-office is the first in South Africa has received an airmail.

Dragonfly Miniature Sheet

This dragonfly is the world’s most widely distributed dragonfly being found in the tropics as well as in temperate zones. It breeds on every continent except Europe and Antarctica and is found all around the world. This species flies almost constantly and drifts with the wind as it feeds. It flies thousands of miles over oceans and because of its characteristic gliding flight, its common name is the Globe Skimmer or Wandering Glider. It can be seen flying almost anywhere in open country, sometimes in great numbers. They rarely perch but at sea they have been known to land on ships far away from land. They usually inhabit the thickly vegetated areas of stream bank areas and lower wetland areas near the ocean. Breeding occurs in standing or slow moving water, so rice paddies in the tropics are particularly suitable habitats. Forests and even rain puddles are also known breeding locations.

Dragonfly date stampThe colour of the thorax and tapered abdomen of both sexes is orangish to light brown with long, broad and clear wings. The small dark area on the tip of the hind-wing is distinctive. The Wandering Glider feeds mainly on insects and small crustaceans. Of distinct advantage to humans is that both the larvae and the adult are great hunters and often eat a lot of insect pests, including mosquitoes. Their main predators are fish.

The ground meteorite has been applied to the stamp by the Austrian State Printing Company using a method specially developed for this purpose. The meteorite was first examined by the Vienna Natural History Museum, an institution that has acquired an excellent international reputation through over 200 years of collecting and investigating meteorites, and identified as being H-chondrite (a stone meteorite, subgroup of “ordinary chondrite”). The ground meteorite has been applied to the stamp by the Austrian State Printing Company using a method specially developed for this purpose. The meteorite was first examined by the Vienna Natural History Museum, an institution that has acquired an excellent international reputation through over 200 years of collecting and investigating meteorites, and identified as being H-chondrite (a stone meteorite, subgroup of “ordinary chondrite”). The Vienna Natural History Museum’s examination provides proof beyond doubt that an original meteorite has been used for the stamp. The meteorite most probably originated from the Asteroid Belt, an accumulation of hundreds of thousands of chunks of stone, ranging in size from gravel stones to mountains, that orbit the sun between Mars and Jupiter (at an orbital radius around three times the distance between the earth and the sun).
The chemical composition of the mineral olivine (stated as Fa18) is typical of this kind of meteorite, and can be verified by examining the meteorite dust on the stamp. The chemical and physical properties of the meteorite examined, like all other meteorites, are such that they constitute no risk to human health.
The part of the roughly 19 kg meteorite that was not required for the production of the stamp has been deposited as a reference sample at the Vienna Natural History Museum, where it is on display.

Butterflies of Malaysia

Malaysia has about 1,000 butterfly species and about half of these are restricted to habitats from sea level to 750 metres above sea level. Although some species can be easily seen in parks, gardens and other secondary vegetation, most Malaysian butterflies are forest dwellers. Some butterflies are habitat-specific and exist only in a specific ecosystem type.

Butterflies are generally day-flying insects of the order Lepidoptera, with often colourful wings. Butterflies feed primarily on nectar from flowers and play an important role as one of the major agent of pollination. However, caterpillars are known to destroy crops and they are considered pests in these circumstances. Butterfly viewing is becoming an increasingly popular hobby. Some species are threatened by collection and habitat loss and require protection by law.

The Roman mosaic of Vichten

Archaeological research undertaken in 1995 on the site of a new agricultural operation in Vichten showed that the terrain in question covered the foundations of one of the most remarkable Roman villas ever discovered in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The excellent state of preservation of the buried remnants is explained by the topographical location of the building built on a slight natural terrace of a hill, facing due south, which rises more than 50 m above the site. From late antiquity, the ruins of the villa were progressively covered by material eroded from the nearby plateau causing the remainder of the villa to be hidden under large mounds of earth (between 0.5 and 3.5 metres).

Dating from around 240 A.D., the mosaic of Vichten, which has an area of 61.3 m2 and is in an excellent state of preservation, shows in its main area the mythological and literary subject of the nine Muses, daughters of the supreme God, Zeus, and of the goddess of memory, Mnémosyne. The Muses are reproduced following the order defi ned around 700 B.C. by the Greek author Hésiode : Clio, Muse of history ; Euterpe, Muse of music and lyric poetry ; Thalie, Muse of comedy ; Melpomène, Muse of tragedy ; Terpsichore, Muse of dance and dramatic choirs; Erato, Muse of love poetry ; Polymnie, Muse choir singing and harmony ; Uranie, Muse of astronomy and lastly, in the large central medallion, Calliope, Muse of epic elegiac poetry, in the company of the prince of poets, Homer. The eight « exterior » Muses are oriented on an axis towards the middle of the central medallion. The depiction of the clothing and other attributes of the different personalities, identified by latin inscriptions included above each medallion, is very detailed.

The overall composition and the purely decorative elements (intertwining, crosses, scroll patterns, etc.), indicates the uncovered mosaic was created in the tradition of the workshops of the town of Trèves, about 50 kilometres away. It is the work of a specialised workshop which, in the course of the 3rd century, created several other similar masterpieces, in particular in Trèves (Mosaic of Monnus) and at Bad Kreuznach (Mosaic of the
Gladiators).

After its dismantling in Vichten in July 1995, the mosaic was transferred to the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Trèves for the first step in restoration. After its return to Luxembourg in March 1997, the fi nal restoration, notably including the fi lling in of various gaps, took place until 1999 in special workshops of the National Museum of History and Art in Luxembourg where it is exhibited today.

Octagon Shape Stamps - Korea - 2nd Series Traditional Culture Special - 2003

Four Octagon Shape Stamps, a new shape in my odd shape stamps collection.
The special stamp depicting traditional Korean culture is issued to demonstrate the wisdom and aesthetic sensitivity of our ancestors by showcasing articles used by them daily. Introduced in the second bundle of the series are sedan chairs which were the main mode of transportation in the olden days.
1) Eoyeon Sedan Chair
This sedan chair reserved for kings was also called Nanga or Nanyeo. Originally, Yeon sedan chairs were used by kings and had wheels underneath to be hauled by horses. Yeo sedan chairs, meanwhile, were carried on the shoulder of bearers. The chairs had Juryeom, a curtain made of beads hanging in the front, left and right sides. These chairs also featured a Bojang, a splendid insignia and had long grips.
2) Choheon Sedan Chair
This single-wheeled sedan chair for government officials above the rank of Jongipum was called ilryungeo, myeonggeo or chocha. Over the single wheel made of iron was the chair sitting high up with grips hanging both at the front and back. The chair was pulled and pushed by six to nine persons. The back of the chair displayed engravings of the sun, clouds and wave patterns.
3) Saingyo Sedan Chair
This sedan chair was used by commoners to carry the bride to the wedding ceremony. Two bearers manned the front while two were at the back to carry the chair. The chair was decorated with colorful tassels and brilliantly embroidered hanging screens. In order to synchronize the four pairs of feet and to alleviate fatigue, the bearers sang songs called Gwonmaseong while transporting the bride on long distance trips.
4) Namyeo Sedan Chair
This small open sedan chair resembles a chair. There is no cover over the chair as it was used for passage through narrow roads including mountain trails. The chair could be carried over the shoulders from the front and the back as it had poles for handles. The sedan chair with four carriers were used by government officials with rank of above Jongipum Champan, while the chair with two carriers were used by government official with the title of Dangsanggwan above the rank of Jeongsampum.

Octagon Shape Stamps - Korea - 1st Series Traditional Culture Special - 2003

Four Octagon Shape Stamps, a new shape in my odd shape stamps collection.
The special stamps on traditional Korean culture are issued to demonstrate the wisdom and aesthetic sensitivity of our ancestors by showcasing articles used everyday by them. Introduced in the first of the series are footwear worn for both protection and adornment. The materials and types of shoes varied widely according to gender, social status, occupation and attendant attire.
1) Unhye schnee
Unhye, also known as Onhye, referred to footwear with a short ankle covering that were worn by women. These shoes were covered with silk and cotton flannel, while their tips and heels were embroidered or covered with cloud-shaped silk. The soles of the shoes were made of leather, with heel and toe plates attached to the sole. These shoes were usually worn by women of royalty, the court and upper-class until the late Joseon Period.
2) Mokhwa (wooden shoes)
Mokhwa, footwear with a long ankle covering, was usually worn with official uniforms. The soles of the shoes were made of wood and covered with leather. The ankle covering was made with black cloth and covered with fur, leather, cotton flannel or silk. The seams were lined with colored cloth. These shoes resembling semi-boots are worn by bridegrooms even today during traditional wedding ceremonies.
3) Jipsin (straw shoes)
Made with straws, Jipsin is also called Bigu or Chohye. These shoes with a long history were the most popular shoes worn by commoners. Jipsin was worn during long journeys, field work and on a daily basis. The tip of the shoes was short, coarsely woven with thick outer rims, usually 26 to 30 in number. Jipsin was also made with hemp, cord twisted with hemp, rushes and bulrushes.
4) Namaksin (wooden clogs)
Usually worn during rain or snow, Namaksin was made of wood. These shoes came with or without heels. Heels were added to avoid water or mud being splashed onto the feet. Sturdy and light wood, usually from paulownia trees and willows, was used to make the shoes. Beeswax was also applied to waterproof the shoes. Namaksin was worn regardless of social status and age. Namaksin for children was colored and embellished.

Circle Shape Stamps - Icelandic Leaf Bread Christmas Iceland

Yet another beautiful round shape stamps in my collection. These two circle shape stamps are released by Iceland Post by the title "Christmas Stamps - Icelandic Leaf Bread".

It was customary in the olden days at most Icelandic farms to ration food more generously during Christmas than at other times. Bread was usually made for the domestics and the farm hands. The round bread sheets were generally made as thin as possible for reasons of economy. It was said that the batter was thin enough when you could read the Bible through it. Various beautiful and diverse patterns were cut in the batter to make the bread as festive as possible. The patterns were usually traditionally styled while creativity also played its part. Many feel that this custom is an indispensable part of the Christmas celebrations. Family and friends often gather together in the beginning of the advent to pattern the bread sheets and fry them. Smoked meat is by many considered most delicious when accompanied by leaf bread.

Butterfly Shape - Pitcairn Islands - Salt and Pepper moth

This cute odd shape miniature sheet is from Pitcairn Islands on fauna or insect or butterfly theme.

The Salt and Pepper moth Utetheisa pulchelloides, is also known as the Heliotrope Moth. It is found on Henderson Island and grows to have a wingspan of approximately 30mm and a body length of 20mm. The moth looks quite white when it is flying, but at rest, the interesting pattern of red / orange and black spots on the white fore wings can be seen. Each hind wing is white with two black spots and an irregular black margin.

The moth is active during the daytime hence the bright colours, which are unusual for a moth. It uses the colours to attract others instead of the usual pheromones emitted at night. It feeds on various plants found throughout the Pacific eg. Octopus Bush Argusia argentea, Salvation Jane / Paterson’s Curse Echium lantagineum, Heliotrope Heliotropium arborescens and Forget-me-Not Myosotis arvensis.
It is believed that they do not cause damage to crops. The eggs are pale green and laid in a row on a leaf tip. The insect pupates in a loose cocoon spun in the leaf litter on the ground below the food plant. The caterpillars have sparse grey hairs and are black with orange spots and broken cream lines along the body.

A prestigious Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship took her to the Solomon Islands to collect orchids where a new species she found, Coelogyne susanae, was named after her.

Sue has designed over 50 natural history stamp issues for nine Pacific countries, including New Zealand and she now lives in New Zealand as a freelance artist.Her last issue for the Pitcairn Islands was Butterflies. Sue recently held a series of successful solo exhibitions in the UK, including Savill Gardens where her work was recognised by Royal patronage.

A youthful snowboarder sweeps across a mountainside in a spray of glittering powder. A helmeted boy flies up a ramp, spins in mid-air and lands with a rumble of skateboard wheels. On a winding trail in a pine forest, a boy on a mountain bike hurtles around a curve. And in a cavernous indoor wall climbing gymnasium, a young competitor inches her way up a towering wall of artificial holds.

On October 1, 2005, Canada Post issued four domestic rate (50¢) snowboarder shaped stamps (Odd Shaped Stamps) to commemorate these youth-oriented, high-energy sports. It's an issue whose time has come, because the popularity of these activities - especially among the young - has been increasing by leaps and bounds for the past 20 years.

"These partially perforated odd shape stamps represent the excitement, the attitudes and the risks involved in these sports," says Alain Leduc, Manager of Stamp Design and Production at Canada Post. "This new issue has been specially created to be attractive to young people, and we think the style will draw their interest."

A beautiful miniature sheet with one large odd shape stamp (Irregular Hexagon) about the celebration of the 29th Olympic Games held in Beijing, Macao Post issued the "The Opening of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games" stamp on the date of opening ceremony on 8 August, 2008, in commemorating the successful achievement of this prestigious sport event in the world.

To tie in with the opening ceremony held in the National Stadium, the image of "Bird’s Nest" is shown on the souvenir sheet, and the National Aquatics Center "Water Cube" is shown on the stamp. The stamp and souvenir sheet are applied with the printing feature of UV varnish to enhance the pictograms of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Elizabeth’s engagement to Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten was announced by King George VI in Buckingham Palace on July 10th 1947.

Before the wedding, Elizabeth’s father gave Philip the British titles Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, and Baron Greenwich.

The couple, who had known each other since Elizabeth was 13 and Philip was 18, were married in Westminster Abbey, London on 20 November 1947.

They spent their honeymoon at Broadlands, Hampshire, the home of Lord Mountbatten, and at Birkhall, Balmoral.

Cats of various breeds will be presented, and even non-cat breeds or pedigree can not be judged. Almost two thousand people usually flock to admire cats carefully-groomed for the occasion - and to discover some unsuspected races. A judge certified shall rank according to criteria specific to each race. This exhibition is organized for three years by the Cat Club of New Caledonia (affiliated to the Federation Feline French) which includes about thirty members. A circle of enthusiasts who share an enormous love for the feline, animal enigmatic and endearing. The cat began to be domesticated, there are 9 000 years in the Middle East. Idolatry in ancient Egypt, he was persecuted as a henchman of Satan in the Europe of the Middle Ages. He then returned to the esteem of people with particular address in the hunt for rodents, both in homes and on board ships. The interest generated by the different races have varied over time depending on modes . Today, the number of breeds and varieties of color is increasing. we can get a house cat at the shelter APS-NC, or, for purists, buy a Persian cat, the king of cats, from a farmer instead.

This is the story of a tortoise named Adwaitya. We all know about the legendary tortoise of folk tales who defeated the hare and won the race. Well, Adwaitya was also a winner. Before he died in the year 2006 in Alipore Zoological Garden, Kolkata, he was perhaps the longest living animal in the world having lived for more than 250 years. People lovingly called him Adwaitya meaning the matchless or the unique (Hindi: Adviteeya i.e. unique or no second) as he was a living example of nature's mysteries. He is supposed to have been born in 1750; however, some say it was 1705. He feed on wheat bran, grams soaked in water, small pieces of carrots, sweet potatoes, beans, leafy vegetables, diced banana and rice mixed with powder gram.

The Aldabra Giant Tortoise (Geochelone gigantea) is a native of Aldabra atoll, part of the Seychelles Islands in the Indian Ocean. The Aldabra atoll has been protected from human influence since late 19th Century and is home to a large number of giant tortoises. The size of the Aldabra Giant Tortoise can be up to 4 Ft. in length and the weight can be about 550 lbs. They are normally dark gray to black in color, have small pointed head covered with scales, a long neck, a highly domed carapace and thick bony scales on forelegs. Adwaitya became ill several months before his death after a crack developed around a wound on his chest, and ultimately succumbed on 22nd March, 2006. Department of Posts is proud to issue a set of two commemorative postage stamps on the Aldabra Giant Tortoise. The specially designed stamps are unique in the sense that they are hexagonal i.e. they have six sides.

Born Mumtaz, Begum Jehan Dehlavi on February 14, 1933 in Delhi, she entered the world of films at the tender age of nine, acting in several films as child artist where her acting potential was noticed by the celebrated Devika Rani Roerich who rechristened her as Madhubala.

Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers. Some 40 countries will issue stamps on climate change. The common theme is Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers. The polar regions play an important role in the global climate system: changes there are reflected around the world and it is precisely where global warming is currently at its fastest and greatest extent. The international stamp collaboration is being led by Itella, the postal operator in Finland.

The Finnish joint issue on climate change is a two-stamp miniature sheet entitled Melting Glaciers designed by Saku Heinänen. The sheet depicts a Polar sea in which pieces of melting ice shelf are floating. In the middle of each stamp on the sheet is a snowflake symbol, the campaign insignia used by all the issuing countries.

World's first translucent stamp

Frosty Night won the 2008 Most Beautiful Stamp of the Year competition in Finland. The stamp designed by Nina Rintala depicts a snowflake, a star and the northern lights. It was issued on 6 November and it is believed to be the world's first translucent (transparent) stamp. Frosty Night was given 9,710 votes. In all, 53,571votes were cast in the competition.
